i have a digital video recorder 500gig HDD for my security cameras. the recorder has a RCA output. how can i view it in my laptop, if my laptop connection only has HDMI and USB?

You'll need to purchase a specialized pigtail which converts the RCA out to a USB connection. I believe they are available at RadioShack or at any online electronics site. I'd be surprised that your laptop doesn't have a S-video imput , so look again. It's a small circle with 4-slots inside it., if you need an example, look on the back of your TV. Be aware, you'll probably need special software to view the data, check the recorder's website to see if there's a download available. Good luck.

Which Digital Video Recorder is better for a Security system, Linux or Windows based?
I currently have windows based DVR systems, but I think the Linux ones are becoming more common.
Definately Linux based. I have gone the route of Billyware and regretted it - Memory leaks, system crashes etc. Linux takes up less ram and is very stable, that and there are no licence fee's paid to Billy by the Mfg so they can afford to make the units better (Windows certified does not come cheap). Other factors to take into consideration are recording rate, image size, compression quality , harddrive quality etc. There is alot of crap retail systems out there in both platforms so be careful. Typically these units are running 24/7 so if they are garbage, expect them to be living there shortly... along with the money you spend. CCTV DVR Digital Video Recorder 4 channel what brand should I use?
So I want to install a CCTV DVR security system but not sure what brand should I use, Costco has some for dirt cheap and the best brand Pelco is thousands more for what looks like the same, help.
I know the Pelco brand is very expensive and is more commonly sold to contractors and for high demanding needs of government account and casinos and is over kill for you. The Costco stuff is more of a toy to play with and get some cctv experience with. I think a good middle of the road brand for you is the everfocus ECOR dvr. Includes burner, web viewing and 3 year warranty for $406 has a VGA connection in the back for a computer monitor but you wont know it until you play with it but the software in the unit is so user friendly.
